Damon Dash’s Child Support Debt to be Paid from His Settlement with Lee Daniels

It would be an understatement to say that Damon Dash owes a lot in child support. According to TMZ, Dash owes $950,000 in unpaid child support to the mothers of his children, Rachel Roy and Cindy Morales.

A few weeks ago, Dash was arrested for failing to make his child support payments. After being unable to get their child support payments from Dash, the mothers of his children turned their attention to the acclaimed film director, Lee Daniels.

In September of this year, Dash won his lawsuit against Daniels and was awarded a $5 million settlement. The mothers of Dash’s children have since come to an agreement with him and Daniels on the issue of child support. According to this agreement, the mothers of Dash’s children will get the $950,000 directly from the settlement funds awarded to Dash. They will be going after Daniels for the money and he will be responsible for paying them several thousand dollars per quarter until the total of $950,000 is paid in full.

Ontario Child Support Laws

In Ontario, child support can be enforced through the Family Responsibility Office (FRO) if they are being paid pursuant to a court order or a domestic contract. When FRO is involved in the enforcement of child support, it has the legal authority and responsibility to take enforcement when the payor spouse falls behind on their support responsibilities.

Enforcement actions to recover the money owed can vary in severity, from garnishing a payor’s wages to suspending their driver’s license. In serious cases, a payor may even receive jail time for not paying child support.

FRO also has the power to redirect and garnish one’s income tax refunds and social benefits from the Government of Canada. Therefore, it is important to make every effort to fulfill one’s support obligations or enter into a voluntary payment plan with FRO in order to avoid the sanctions associated with non-payment of child support.
